Current Goals of CV CAN

The initial focus of CV CAN is to replace the dilapidated track and playing field at Crescenta Valley High School with a state of the art composition track, synthetic turf field, and practice lighting. This facility is the focal point for school sports and community recreation in the Crescenta Valley.

Project Background

The CVHS track and field are a school and community hub for school sports, and youth and adult sports and recreational activities. Due to the daily amount of use that the facility receives, the turf and track are in constant disrepair. Even after regular maintenance the field cannot handle the usage. The track and field are unusable after light rain. Bottom line, the school district spends a significant amount of money and time yearly to maintain the field and track with unsatisfactory results for our school and community.

Criteria Synthetic Turf Natural Turf
Durability Withstands heavy and repetitive use even during heavy rainfall. Needs ongoing, maintenance repair; especially after rain.
Abrasion 100% polyethylene eliminates most abrasions. No rug burns! Somewhat abrasive. injuries occur due to lack of uniform surface, rocks and dirt.
Ball Action Balls react, bounce and play similar to well-maintained natural turf. Imperfection susch as weed patches, exposed dirt, mud spots, and sprinker heads can cause inconsistent ball action.
Safety Does not produce foot-lock or turf-toe. Better shock attenuation, especially over time since little compaction occurs. Foot-lock and turf-toe will occur. Force and shock attenuation diminish with heavy use and soil compaction.
Appearance Always maintains a look of freshly mowed lawn. Won't maintain that new lawn look over time. Areas of heavy use wear down and weeds move in.
Replacement Lasts up to and possible beyond 15 years with a high likelihood of replacing only worn areas. Annual reseeding required which leads to downtime for re-growth. Excessive compaction typically requires complete reconstruction.
Temperature Temperature tends to be slightly warmer (up to ten degrees) than the air temperature off the field. Temperature would be equivalent to the temperatuer off the field.
Cost 1.2 to 1.4 million over 15 years. Maintenance and renovation cost $75,000 the first year. In 15 years cost will be at least $900,000 and field will still be in disrepair for the majority of the time.

Despite the high initial cost, the maintenance savings as well as the fact that the field is almost always in ready to use condition makes synthetic turf and a new rubberized track a much better option than the current system in use today.
